surprisingly that is what one professor in Singapore said. The local newspaper quote him as saying that we are living longer and longer, so we might as well work lesser hours per day, but work till ripe old age.

Incredible essay! Wow, I think I've seen snippets of this before but it is really powerful to sit down and read the whole thing. Gives whole new meaning to the idea of the Four-Hour Work Week, eh?

A few points really stuck out to me as incredibly powerful and true:

*Usually two opposite kinds of advice are given simultaneously by two organized bodies of men; this is called politics. The skill required for this kind of work is not knowledge of the subjects as to which advice is given, but knowledge of the art of persuasive speaking and writing, i.e. of advertising.

*The morality of work is the morality of slaves, and the modern world has no need of slavery.

*Hitherto we have continued to be as energetic as we were before there were machines; in this we have been foolish, but there is no reason to go on being foolish forever.

I think I will be reflecting on this for quite some time. If only society could open its mind to something so revolutionary! Imagine the good that could come of it. Well, you sharing this sort of philosophy is one great step in the right direction, JD. Keep it up!!

As an underemployed young person, I'm constantly feeling guilty of any time I spend not trying to make money and be financially secure. I feel so much pressure to work constantly. It would be so lovely to do what I want to do with my time, without worrying about "living up to my potential."

That was a tough but good read. I agree with much of what he said, though getting the human race to all agree is the difficult part.

I am beyond the point of believing that could ever happen on as grand a scale as even a country, but I think it's a good goal to work toward on an individual level.

"The modern man thinks that everything ought to be done for the sake of something else, and never for its own sake."

I connected with that line. I am a very thoughtful planner and organizer and am constantly working to secure something better...in the future. To an extent, this is necessary for survival, but when pursued as an obsession, robs all the joy of living simply to live. It's impossible to enjoy the here and now if your only thought is of tomorrow.
