Awesome mental framing. I appreciated how your approached it, and I couldn't agree more. Mastering the mind is the only true path to freedom. The power I see in being adept in your own mind control is that your physical actions will follow the stand you've made for yourself up in your noggin. (although they don't have to) Good story!

So, you made up that parable? If so, that a very impressive bit of writing. My hat off to you.

I think we, as human beings, go through certain cycles of fear/non-fear. It's seems to be easy to be unafraid when you're young, but then life happens and your fear grows. Maybe you have more to lose or perceive reality more.

At a certain age (or when you reach a certain mentality) the fear starts ebbing away again. I think the older I get, the less fear I have because I've learned through the years that worst-case scenarios rarely happen and more often than not, what we feared never really materialize.

Thanks for the response, Karen

@Steven- Really? a government that can monitor and regulate people's thoughts? Awesome. I mean awesome in that I would ask the cops how they do it so I can police my own thoughts, that has always been my wish, to somehow control the thoughts swimming around in my mind. Not all the way there, but my thoughts have become much more pleasant which has turned my emotions much sweeter.

@Karen- I've read some of Pavlina's work and I find it incredibly valuable but very clinical. To me anyway.

I wrote the parable to describe the way I felt within myself throughout the majority of my life. For some reason, I grew up experiencing a certain fear, about many things, and this fear dominated my thoughts. I knew that there was a way to escape---and I was wild and willful as hell---but I was always afraid. Fear ruled me.

Because this all was happening within myself, unlike Sara, I didn't have the option to leave. I HAD to stay and fight. And I realized that through my struggle, the more I surrendered, the free-er (not a word, but oh well) I felt.

Thanks for the comments!

Is 1984 where the quote is from? I haven't read the book, but the parable is very powerful.

I agree that slavery is a state of mind. It's crazy how much of our power we give away to pieces of paper. Pavlina has a great similar article which made me think of slavery while in a cubicle: http://www.stevepavlina.com/blog/2009/10/you-vs-the-cubicle/

Sometimes it's so easy to do option 3 - do nothing. We must keep in mind that the struggle to unleash the shackles are worth it.

Interesting article.
